Anyone else completed this? If not, I’m going to download the french version, translate everything and post everything back here.

Also, are there any caveats to installing multiple versions of wordpress so that (in my case) the site can be viewed in multiple languages?

No, if it’s subsites or something along those lines then there’s no problem in having different WordPress installations.
