Can I validate a custom registration field?

I want to add a field that is a code that user can enter. I really don’t want a pull down because, one, the list may be long and two the list will be dynamic. I would like to validate it against a list of values in the database ideally or even a text list or some such things would be acceptable. Is there anyway to do this
