Changing Capabilities in User Profile

I cannot change the custom capabilities in user profile. Is there a setting somewhere that I’ve missed to allow making changes to s2member settings in the profile? I can type the change into the field, but when submitted no changes are made in the database.

When a user registers and pays – the appropriate custom capability is assigned. But not for a manually entered user and not for any changes to an existing user (after registration and payment). Making a change to custom capabilities on the user profile page merely deletes the custom capability entirely and it has to be re-entered manually in mySQL admin.

Any ideas would be most appreciated. I can go into the database and manually grant custom capabilities – but this is not something my client can do!
