We intend to offer a 7 day free trial to a subscription. Can youe software catch cheaters who cancel the trial before 7 days and then subscribe again for a trial?

If yes, how is this accomplished?

Hi John.

No, this is not really easy to do. You see, if we had any way to tell if it’s the same person, it’d be simpler, but the guy could use a different email address each time, or IP addresses using proxies, or delete his cookies.

You could probably use Flash cookies, which are removed less often, but it’s not something s2Member uses. May be a good idea, though. I’ll ask Jason.

Thanks for the heads up on this thread.

While we’re always open to new ideas, I’m not currently aware of any clean/standard way to prevent this. As Cristian mentioned, Flash Cookies, or other forms of extremely advanced tracking might help to thwart this behavior. However, we can’t build things like that into s2Member and offer support for them. Those are things you’d need to implement in some custom fashion.

My wordpress says that my s2member needs updating, but I can’t log in and your system will not send me a confirmation. So, I had to create a new profile, and it is almost impossible to contact you. I happened to find this. I need to log in to my account that i purchased s2member pro. I have tried for days to get you to send me my password. I would have the information, but someone stole my laptop along with the emails and information. I have tried every password i can think of and it just isn’t working. Until you contact me, i can’t very well upgrade my site.

Hi John.

I understand. Could you please tell us what your username for the first account was, or the email address, please? Do you still have access to that email account?

My email is teachertec@comcast.net. Yes, I still have access. I do know my email works because i get and send email from it all the time. Your password reset is not coming in.

So far we catch them by comparing address on their credit card. It seems it should not be too difficult to implement, perhaps as a flag for the administrator and not granting automatic access pending approval by the administrator.

We also see very few cases of different IP.

John Brittain, I emailed Elizabeth to help you with the account access, and cc’ed you. Please continue by email with her, she’ll help you sort it out. :)

John Williams, yeah, approvinng the accounts manually is certainly a way to catch cheaters. To do that, you can protect the content at level higher than the one they get on registration, then you review the account and “approve” it upgrading it manually from the profile.

I hope that helps!
