They didnt. Until I removed the Theme My Login plugin.

After many hours of research, I think TML conflicts w/ S2. The requirements I put on extra registration field were overridden by TML (i.e. I had a State field that was required and would only accept exactly 2 letters, but we had a user register w/o entering a state).

Everything works perfectly w/o Theme My Login
