When attempting to get:
http://lowvolatilitystocks.com/?s2member_file_download=US_Vol_500_Lowest_2012-05.pdf

I get redirected to the membership options page:
http://www.lowvolatilitystocks.com/membership-options/?_s2member_seeking%5Btype%5D=file&_s2member_seeking%5Bfile%5D=US_Vol_500_Lowest_2012-05.pdf&_s2member_seeking%5B_uri%5D=Lz9zMm1lbWJlcl9maWxlX2Rvd25sb2FkPVVTX1ZvbF81MDBfTG93ZXN0XzIwMTItMDUucGRm&_s2member_req%5Btype%5D=level&_s2member_req%5Blevel%5D=1&_s2member_res%5Btype%5D=file&s2member_seeking=file-US_Vol_500_Lowest_2012-05.pdf&s2member_level_req=1

The url shows that the site is looking for level #1, but I am logged in as a level #1 user.

I dont remember setting a member level access restriction for any download assets.
Is there a place to specify a specific member level for a download file?

Level 1 is our “bronze” level, but I am logged in as a bronze level.
I can confirm this because the link is on a Page that is restricted to Bronze users.

Yes, I do see the download count warning before I get redirected to the membership options page.

none of our users can download the files protected in s2member-files. Any clue where to start???

I finally found and fixed the problem with the downloads.
I knew that I had not encountered this problem in my testing over the weekend.
However, when I installed the security certificate (for tech reasons) the official name of the site had to change from http://lowvolatilitystocks.com to http://www.lowvolatilitystocks.com

This change allowed for the SSL security certificate to work properly, but it broke the security features of our membership program protecting the downloads.

When I went back in to the page code and changed the download links from
<a href=”http://lowvolatilitystocks.com/?s2member_file_download=US_Cap_All_Small_2012-05.pdf”>
to
<a href=”http://www.lowvolatilitystocks.com/?s2member_file_download=US_Cap_All_Small_2012-05.pdf”>

The downloads started working again, complete with our limitations on the number of reports downloaded.

This was just one of those very unfortunate fluke problems that keeps programmers up at night.

So my advice is the if you plan to use ProForms, you will need to have an SSL certificate. Be very sure to include (or exclude) the www host name in your site and S2 configuration to match the certificate demands.

BTW I also had to go back and edit all my proform shortcodes with the WWW as well.

Thanks for the valuable reminder, David! I’m glad you sorted it out.

This is a good article related to this, which we have to use from time to time: Knowledge Base » Don't mix www and without
