Hello guys, I have a problem with s2member pro slowing down my website performance by like 3-4 seconds according to gtmatrix. when s2 is deactivated my page speed grade and yslow grade having an A rating with a load speed of 1 sec sometimes even less vs 3-4 second load time with the s2 plugin activated. This plugin slows my site down with out a doubt. Ive tested my other plug ins and I dont get that problem. So s2 is the problem, gtmatrix says the following s2 images are causing performace lag and to combine the following images.

•http://www.something/wp-content/plugins/s2member-pro/images/coupon-icon.png
•http://www.something.com/wp-content/plugins/s2member-pro/images/discover-card.png
•http://www.something.com/wp-content/plugins/s2member-pro/images/paypal-card.png
•http://www.something.com/wp-content/plugins/s2member-pro/images/secure-icon.png
•http://www.something.com/wp-content/plugins/s2member-pro/images/solo-card.png
•http://www.something.com/wp-content/plugins/s2member-pro/images/visa-card.png
•http://www.something.com/wp-content/plugins/s2member/images/ajax-loader.gif

Ok how do you combine this images using CSS sprites and where is the css page for s2member also how would you or where do place the combine images. I need detailed instructions please. thanks.

It may be more than just S2….

1. Are you on a shared hosting account? If so, it adds far too many variables and most are not properly configured to run WP with optimal settings.

2. Check how much memory your site is using when all plugins are enabled
Here’s a plugin to see: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tpc-memory-usage/

32 meg is the default for WP and you may need to increase the memory for PHP & WP…

NO Did you not see when I mentioned that when s2member is disabled my website is moves twice as fast. NO PLUGIN is causing this but s2member. I know its the case since Ive tested my site without the plugin. nor is it my memory or any thing else, my hosting package is fine and its not them. its S2member period. And from what Ive been reading im not the only who has been threw this. Gtmatrix says its the above files or images causing the delay which is part of s2member. Ok. Are you guys fimilar with css sprites first of all? That was the question I asked. Again how do you combine those images and where would you put them?. Thats all I want to know I need this website moving. I have other websites with a load time of 0.63sec. while my s2member site has a load time of 3-4 seconds. thats to slow. help resolves this please thanks

Hi Chase.

I’m familiar with what CSS sprites are, but I have never used them. s2Member doesn’t use them and I don’t know what it’d take to implement them.

I’ll show this to Jason, the Lead Developer, as a feature request to take into account for the new s2Member being developed, which will be faster in general. Thanks for the sprites idea!

In the meantime, if you want to have them now, you’d need to customize it yourself. The pro-forms template can be edited, although you’ll need to edit the JS too.

Thanks for the heads up on this thread.

@ chase a

s2member pro slowing down my website performance by like 3-4 seconds according to gtmatrix

Thanks for reporting this important issue. While sprites are certainly a good idea in many cases, they’re not as easy for site owners to swap in and out when attempting to further customize s2Member Pro. That being said, we’ll take it under advisement. We’re certainly interested in improving speed in any way that we can.

Regarding your tests…

A few small icons should NOT (under normal circumstances), slow down your load time by 3-4 seconds. You would have to be loading the site with a much slower connection for those small images to cause that much lag for you. Even if you’ve isolated the lag… e.g. it’s happening when the s2Member plugin is active (e.g. you know it’s s2Member), I would start by following the suggestions posted by Rob above:
http://www.s2member.com/forums/topic/s2member-slowing-my-site-down/#post-30202

Regardless of which plugins are active, sometimes it can simply be attributed to the quantity of plugins vs. the available resources on the server. I’ve also seen bottlenecks occur where there is a theme or other plugins conflicting with s2Member in one way or another. If problems persist, please post a link to your site, or to a test site, so that we can make an attempt to reproduce the lag that exists on your site with the s2Member plugin active. If it’s something related to client-side processing (images, JS, CSS, etc), that will show right up for us too; and we can offer you some suggestions or even a fix for any problems we find together.

Thanks for the reply jason it was good to hear from you, Im still battling this load time problem but I have a few things I wanna try first to see if it will work such as using a cdn and etc. I’ll keep you guys posted also. Also what does it mean to deactivate the default css s2member? Someone advised me to do this on this forum. but I dont know what it means or what it will do to my website.

Well, if you wanted to compress all your CSS into a single file, including s2Member’s, then you’d want to stop s2Member from adding its own CSS file, since you’d have those styles already. Pre Sale FAQs » How can I prevent s2Member® Pro from loading it’s default CSS?

Cascading Style Sheets. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascading_Style_Sheets

If you want to customize this but don’t know how, it would be best to hire a freelancer for the job. You can try sites like jobs.wordpress.net, elance.com or odesk.com
