I would like to create a simple login process at the top of the page, similar to what you do on the s2member website. It keeps the login process up and out of the way.

What is the best approach to take? Can you provide any examples?

I am not a coder and I have limited technical skills.

You can try a plugin for that. This one may do what you need:
