when I try to search for users it takes a very long time. I deactivated all other plugins and the problem remains. I deactivate s2 and the search results are almost instant. 699 members. any thoughts??

Thank you for reporting this important issue.

I have seen this happen on hosting environments such as cloud hosting where the SQL database is not very strong. s2Member has WordPress query much more information and it can slow down the process if your database is not up-to-snuff. An upgrade on this from your hosting company would help this.
