Would this work? (2 Payment CCaps at Level 0)

I’ve been reading about not being able to handle multiple recurring payments in this version, which is why the custom capabilities buttons are buy now.

But what if the customer does not currently have any recurring payment (they’re at level 0), is it possible to set up a two payment option (6 week trial + one time/one year payment) that adds ccaps and keeps them at level 0?

In other words, the default is level=”1″ to upgrade to level 1, but can I change this to stay at level 0 without anything breaking?

No. Only levels can be sold with a subscription, and level 0 can’t be sold because it’s the free level. You’ll have sell level 1 to do that. This would also be best because level 0 is the one users are demoted to when the subscription ends, so the paid content should be at a higher level (e.g. 1).
