I have a WordPress site w/ s2member.

I want to add a member forum to my site by installing Buddypress in a subdirectory (e.g. http://www.myWordPressSite.net/forum).

I have s2member Unlimited-site License.

I’m hoping my existing install (on http://www.myWordPressSite.net) will control access to the Buddypress site, with same users.

Please advise!

BIG Thanks!

If you make BuddyPress work with the same WordPress installation you have s2Member running on, it should be fine.

OK- I’ve set up my network.

Should I install s2member Pro as a NETWORK plugin or only on my primary site?

So you have a multisite network? Will you be giving blogs to your users or just using it that way to organize your site?

s2Member will be usable in all the blogs if you activate that, but each instance will be independent of the rest. Not because you have s2Member set up in one, will it share its settings with s2Member in another.

I’m not very familiar with advanced multisite setups, but have seen some users find this thread useful:

You may also want to search the old forum for buddypress in multisite, you may find helpful posts.

I hope that helps.

I’ve tried activating it both ways, and neither will protect the sub-directory install of buddypress.

I guess my best option is to activate s2member on the buddypress site and sync the two.

How do I set up notifications or whatever so that when someone registers in s2member on site #1 (main site) they automatically get membership to site #2 (buddypress)?

Definitely, you can’t have s2Member in one blog and protect BuddyPress in another. They’ll have to be in the same one.

It’s not a notification that you need to have someone register in one and be in the other too, you’d have to find how to share users between blogs in a multisite network. I suggest you Google for it.

But I’ll have s2member activated on both sites.

Isn’t there a way to do an integration?

Hi Aly,

While s2Member is compatible with WordPress Multisite Networking, the sites within a WordPress network are separate and not interconnected. That means you cannot share users, logins, or other data across the sites (including access control).

Please see the following from WordPress.org:

The sites in a multisite network are separate, very like the separate blogs at WordPress.com. They are not interconnected like things in other kinds of networks (even though plugins can create various kinds of interconnections between the sites). If you plan on creating sites that are strongly interconnected, that share data, or share users, then a multisite network might not be the best solution.

The s2Member Multisite feature allows you to offer the s2Member plugin to sub-sites, giving your sub-sites the ability to setup and use s2Member on their own. When you upgrade s2Member on the primary site, the s2Member plugin is automatically updated for all your sub-sites. However, things like access restrictions on one WP installation are not shared across WP installations (again, the WordPress Multisite feature itself isn’t designed to work like that, so s2Member also doesn’t work like that).

There are plugins that allow you to get around these WordPress Multisite limitations, however they may or may not work with s2Member.

I get that. My question is how to automatically add members who register on site #1 to s2member in site #2.

Can I get paypal to send the notification twice? Can s2member on site #1 send a notification to s2member on site #2?

Hi Aly,

s2Member does not support what you’re describing. You may be able to make it work by doing some custom programming, however we do not provide support for such custom programming (please see support policy):

We do NOT offer professional installation service, customizations, or services involving custom coding. If you need assistance in this regard, we recommend jobs.wordpress.net, or another freelance web site where WordPress® experts are offering their expertise through a bid on your project.

Fair enuf. But it does seem like a good “to do” for future versions :)

If I figure it out I’ll post info here…

Thanks again for all of your help!
