How to update custom profile fields

Hello, I am wondering if a function similar to get_the_author_meta() exists but rather than retrieving the custom profile data I would like to modify it. To my knowledge the only way for a logged in user to update profile settings is to log into the account and edit the profile via the wordpress profile editor. My client has deemed this editor not aesthetically pleasing and scary to end users so they have ask that I program a cleaner profile editing page. Do you have any suggestions on how I could go about updating profile fields outside of the wordpress profile editor?
