Mass Upgrade of Users from Free to Premium

I tried mass upgrading about hundreds of user accounts from membership to premium but it’s not working. I first exported the user list and then just changed the value of the role column from subscriber to s2member_level1. When I import it, s2member says it’s updated but when I export the list again, it still says ‘subscriber’ in the role column.
