We have a free membership level, which we want to make easy to join, with little registration info to fill out. For paying members, we want a lot of fields for them to fill out (and thereby find other members with similar interests) including such fields as favorite books, movies, etc. with lots of personal information. Using BuddyPress we are able to do this but the registration form looks really intimidating to a new visitor who wishes to sign up for free membership (our newsletter). The form is really long, even though only a few fields are “required” to register. Is there a tutorial here on how to hide those other fields from the new member registration page but still have them available on everyone’s logged in profile?

Did you integrate these Registration/Profile Fields with s2Member, or with BuddyPress?
See: Dashboard -› s2Member® -› General Options -› Registration/Profile Fields
Look under the BuddyPress integration section there.

If you configure Registration/Profile Fields with s2Member®, you can automatically hide them from different Membership Levels (even during Registration), by limiting their scope.
