OK – this is an issue I noticed when upgrading this morning.

The situation I saw was this:

I got a notification via WordPress there was a new version of s2Member. I go ahead an upgrade that – since that was all through the WordPress there were no problems and I got the “regular” version of s2Member up on my site. The problem was that *only* upgraded s2Member but not s2Member Pro. OK – so the next step is when s2Member (Pro) told me I need upgrade Pro. The problem here is this is done through the s2Member site itself – and if that site is DOWN for any reason I am suddenly faced with *only* having s2Member (regular version)on my site and any nice features of pro I was using are now out until s2Member is back up. As an example I use the s2Member Pro Login widget exclusively on my site and that is the main way people get on – with s2Member regular that goes away.

This happened last night. I upgraded and didn’t realize s2Member.com was ‘undergoing maintenance for a few minutes’. Those few minutes were more than 20 so I ended up reverting my site back to the old version of the plugin.

Is there a way to have s2Member Pro verify it can get all it needs before it recommends an upgrade? I realize maintenance happens but the way the system is set up now it seems we are wide open for this to happen again. A simple check against the s2Member site could verify “All parts available – please upgrade” or say “No access to s2Member Pro upgrade – try again later”.

Does this make sense?

Hi Sunny. Yes, that’s a great idea.
I’ll see what we can do about implementing that.

Another way of doing an upgrade is via FTP. Both s2Member and s2Member Pro can be upgraded via FTP instead, so that you’re not relying on the automatic upgrade script. That being said, I do see your point. Either way if the site is down, this makes things difficult. We don’t go down often, but it would still be nice to have this :-)

Yah, you know what I’m talking about Jason! haha

The thing is – it doesn’t really matter how it’s done as long as the issue of being able to update s2Member and s2Member pro is somehow addressed. I wouldn’t mind if it’s a message inside WordPress which forced me to go to your site or whatever. Because the option to update s2Member standard edition exists independent of your website (via WordPress) you are essentially also saying “Hey Guys – s2Member Pro updates are good to go!” at the same time. Which in some cases they aren’t.

I know you get it so I won’t belabor it. I also realize we are talking about edge cases and 99.9 percent of the time this won’t happen.

Geez – if the friggin WordPress update looked for s2Member Pro first and updated Pro first then this wouldn’t have happened. You know pull form your site first then pull s2Member standard off WordPress. Just a thought.
