How come usernames cannot have special characters like “.” and “@” in their username? We want users to be able to use their email address as their username. Does this break something?

Yeah, that’s a limitation in WordPress itself.

There is kind of another way around it. I am using MailChimp and got a plugin developped where the member is actually registering through the MailChimp registration form and the plugin then uses the email address and creates a matching account in the s2Member installation.

The plugin is available here:

And if you dont need to use MailChimp, just ask the developper if he can skip that part for you.
