just trying to keep this front and center, i am using S2 to power a video based site so the issues are important. hopefully we can keep current on the topic. as you guys now, this is something that is sort of cutting edge and evolving.

old/current: http://www.primothemes.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14780

new:
https://developer.apple.com/resources/http-streaming/
https://app.zencoder.com/docs/api/encoding/encryption

like JW says:

Many people appear to be primarily using RTMP dynamic streaming for Flash clients, and Apple HTTP Live (HLS) streaming for mobile platforms which support it.

dev tests:
http://developer.longtailvideo.com/player/branches/adaptive/test/provider.html

in general, my hope is to have discussion / dev of the already great S2 security features (that might not need to rely on servers like wowza). i will update more ASAP…feel free to add any new video related infos or experiences.

see tags for where i am trying to take this:

Video, AWS, HTTP Streaming, HLS, AES-128 Encryption, FMS, RTMP, JW Player

Hi Bob. Thanks for starting this thread.

At the risk of it sounding like I’m dodging the point that you’re making, I’ll go ahead and fill you in on the latest here. We did quite a bit of work on s2Member’s integration with Amazon S3/CloudFront, and it’s file protection routines in general, not too long ago. However, as you’re aware, there is still MUCH more than can be done, for sure. Evolving is a good way to put it, as you said in your post.

Our focus right now is on the next generation of the s2Member architecture, but soon after the next major release, we do have every intention of coming back to improve the features for audio/video protection.

WOWZA has definitely been considered. To be honest though, none of us know much about it yet. Dr. Byte (aka: Sam, who is an avid s2Member site owner that knows quite a bit about this topic), posted some details for me awhile back, but we’ve not been through them yet. We will though.

While we work through the next generation of s2Member, I will certainly welcome any input from you and others, about what you’d like to see in a future release.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing where this thread might take us :-)

sounds good Jason. i do know that a big update everyone is waiting for is JW Player who is said to be supporting HLS for iOS in next release. I guess the switching and HTTP playback can be passed off to the native iOS player now but requires some tricky js whereas would be more built in when JW is updated.

Wowza is said to be a great server but it is expensive plus requires overhead to learn, config and run. but I’ll leave the final word on that to . Dr. Byte! My hope is that with the upcoming JW even folks who might not be up for the full blown streaming server thing could still serve RTMP to web and HLS to iOS. i’ll post back asap.
