s2Member® Pro is very easy to install.
- First, you need to have the latest free version of s2Member® already installed (i.e. the s2Member® Framework). You can download the s2Member® Framework and install it manually, or just log into your WordPress® Dashboard, and go to Plugins -> Add New. Type in "s2Member" and click Install, then Activate the s2Member® Framework plugin.
- Now, unzip the latest distribution of s2Member® Pro, and upload the /s2member-pro folder to your /wp-content/plugins directory via FTP. We recommend FileZilla™. You should end up with /wp-content/plugins/s2member-pro/pro-module.php, along with several other files and sub-directories. Make sure you don't accidentally nest two /s2member-pro/s2member-pro directories together. For example, this is NOT correct: /wp-content/plugins/s2member-pro/s2member-pro/pro-module.php.
- That's it! s2Member® Pro will be auto-loaded by the s2Member® Framework.
It's that simple to install s2Member® Pro?
Yep. No need to activate the s2Member® Pro Module. The s2Member® Framework will automatically load s2Member® Pro. After installing s2Member® Pro, you'll want to re-explore all of your option panels. s2Member® Pro adds new features. In particular, you'll want to go back over all of your s2Member® -> PayPal® Options. Also check your Dashboard under: s2Member® -> Other Gateways.
How will I know that s2Member® Pro is active, or not?
s2Member® Pro adds new features & option panels. You can also go to: WordPress® -> Plugins in your Dashboard. Find s2Member® in the list. You will see a marker indicating the installed version of both the s2Member® Framework and your copy of s2Member® Pro. The s2Member® Pro module is auto-loaded by the s2Member® Framework plugin. Therefore, deactivating the s2Member® Framework plugin would also deactivate s2Member® Pro. s2Member® Pro itself is not really a plugin, it's an add-on module, driven by the s2Member® Framework plugin.
Auto-updating s2Member® Pro to the latest version.
- In your WordPress® Dashboard, go to: s2Member® -> General Options -> Deactivation Safeguards. Be sure that safeguards are on. This tells s2Member® NOT to remove any existing data/options; should WordPress® try to deactivate it inadvertently.
- Backup your files and database before upgrading any aspect of your WordPress® installation.
- Upgrading the s2Member® Framework also upgrades your copy of s2Member® Pro automatically. In your Dashboard, go to WordPress® -> Plugins. Find s2Member® in the list of plugins, and choose "upgrade automatically". Or, if that fails with memory errors, you can upgrade manually via FTP. See instructions below.
Why would I get memory errors during automatic upgrade?
This depends on your hosting provider and/or server configuration. Some hosting companies impose very low limits on the amount of memory available to WordPress® during the execution of a single script. Since s2Member® is a larger plugin, WordPress® may exceed conservative limits set forth by shared hosting companies. The solution is to upgrade manually via FTP. Memory limits only affect the WordPress® auto-installation/upgrade routine, not the actual functionality of WordPress® or s2Member®.
Manually updating s2Member® Pro via FTP (alternative).
- In your WordPress® Dashboard, go to: s2Member® -> General Options -> Deactivation Safeguards. Be sure that safeguards are on. This tells s2Member® NOT to remove any existing data/options; should WordPress® try to deactivate it inadvertently.
- Backup your files and database before upgrading any aspect of your WordPress® installation.
- Log in via FTP. We recommend FileZilla™. Completely delete the /wp-content/plugins/s2member and /s2member-pro directories. You can leave /s2member-logs and /s2member-files. These extra directories contain files that should NOT be removed or overwritten.
- Unzip the latest s2Member® Framework distribution file, and upload the /s2member folder to /wp-content/plugins. You should end up with /wp-content/plugins/s2member/s2member.php, along with several other files and sub-directories. Make sure you don't accidentally nest two /s2member/s2member directories together. For example, this is NOT correct: /wp-content/plugins/s2member/s2member/s2member.php.
- Unzip the latest s2Member® Pro distribution file, and upload the /s2member-pro folder to /wp-content/plugins. You should end up with /wp-content/plugins/s2member-pro/pro-module.php, along with several other files and sub-directories. Make sure you don't accidentally nest two /s2member-pro/s2member-pro directories together. For example, this is NOT correct: /wp-content/plugins/s2member-pro/s2member-pro/pro-module.php.
- Log into your WordPress® Dashboard and go to: WordPress® -> Plugins. s2Member® is capable re-activating itself automatically when it detects a new set of files. So even with a manual upgrade, everything will load up safely upon returning to your WordPress® Dashboard. You should see a notice in the Plugins panel of your Dashboard, indicating success.

It is always a good idea to take your site offline during an upgrade. Try WP Maintenance Mode.
