Hello
I am having real trouble wit this. I exported my members opened them in Excel, using the same format I updated the address and contact fields then saved as a CSV. Then opened the CSV file in notepad and enclosed all of the data in “s exactly as it shows in the Import screen yet it will NOT update the members addresses etc.

Any ideas?
Cheers
Soosie

Hi Soosie,

When you say it will not update the members addresses, what exactly happens? Does it say anything when you run the import?

Could you copy/paste a full line from the import file (preferably one that you’re having a problem with) and share that here with us? That will help us determine if there’s a problem with the format.

Hi Raam
There were no error messages it said it had updated 135 members – but it didn’t change anything. It should have updated the membership levels from level3 to level0 on about 50 and added address details for all of them.
Here is one line from the csv file:
“5”,”soosie999″,””,”soosie”,”jobson”,”soosie999″,”soosie@soosie.com.au”,”http://www.soosie.com.au/blog”,”s2member_level4″,””,”12/02/2011″,””a:3:{s:5:\level\””;s:10:\””1343288141\””;s:6:\””level3\””;s:10:\””1343288141\””;s:6:\””level4\””;s:10:\””1345450813\””;}””””,””,”06/30/2013″,””,””,””,””,”addr1″,”2 Fisher Street”,”City”,”WHITE GUM VALLEY”,”country”,”Australia”,”phone”,”9840 1149″,”thestate”,”WA”,”zip”,”6162″
Cheers

Hi Soosie,

Is that sample line you posted one of the users that should’ve been updated to Level 0? In the line you posted above, the level is currently set to Level 4 (s2member_level4).

If that’s not the case, could you please share with us one of the lines that you updated to Level 0?

I can but the one above didn’t update the address fields either.

Heres a level0

"161","zizi","","Suzanne","Jones","zizi","suzizi1@hotmail.com","","s2member_level0","","5/12/2012",""a:2:{s:5:\level\"";s:10:\""1343288141\"";s:6:\""level3\"";s:10:\""1343288141\"";}"""","","06/30/2013","","","","","addr1","67 The Promenade","City","MT PLEASANT","country","Australia","phone","9444 5915","thestate","WA","zip","6153"

Hi Soosie.

There seems to be something odd with the double quotes in the line you posted. I think it’s best to not do those manually. If Excel won’t enclose the CSV values in double quotes, then you should try using OpenOffice’s Calc, which does. Then you can edit the CSV in the spreadsheet and save without worrying about fixing the format.

Let me know how it goes. :)

Hi Christiane

I ahve manually edited our membership to correct them for two reasons. Firstly the amount of time it has taken to get a response has meant our site was incapacitated which was unacceptable and secondly I am not prepared to download another program to our system for a one off operation.

I am a little disappointed in the response time especially as I had to chase a reply – even if you were thinking about the issue a heads up would have been appreciated. This shortcoming short have been made clear BEFORE I purchased the plugin – not after, so far two problems for nil practical solution.

Soosie,

The problem here is that your import file is corrupted and it looks like it’s corrupted because of what you’re doing to it after you make your changes.

As Cristian mentioned, looking at the example lines you shared, there is a problem with the double-quotes. You have several fields that are doubly enclosed with double-quotes, meaning that when s2Member runs the import, it sees nothing in the field (which would explain why things are not being updated as your expecting).

After you run an export and s2Member gives you the .csv file, you can open that in Excel, make your modifications to the columns, and then re-save the file making sure that it’s saved as CSV (Comma Separated Values) with “Double-Quotes Enclosing” fields. There is no need to manually add double-quotes to the CSV file and it sounds like that is the part where your import file is becoming corrupted.

Microsoft Excel has a lot of different options and it’s easy to choose the wrong settings when you re-save the file. The alternative to Microsoft Excel is OpenOffice.org Clac, which is a free and open-source suite of office-type applications.

I don’t personally have Excel on my computer so I have no way of walking you through the re-saving process step-by-step with Excel. (I do, however, use OpenOffice.org Clac.) The default settings with OpenOffice.org work just fine for re-saving CSV files, but I’m not sure about the defaults for Excel.
