I’ve just completed setting up a membership site using Optimizepress/aweber/paypal/s2member. It was working really well for a few days, then I started getting error 503 messages when trying to log in as a paid member.
Hostgator tells me this is because the s2member plug in is too much (my technical term) for a shared server. From what I can see, a dedicated server is quite expensive for a startup like me. I was only using it for a $47 (one time) full access to secured area. So not a big ongoing income to justify the cost.

I would take a few days to find a solution, only I jumped on to check my email this morning and discovered email notification that someone has found my site and joined!!!

Now I need to move fast. Have any of you experienced this yourself or have any possible solutions for me???

Hi Shelley,

We have many customers running s2Member (free and Pro) on a shared server, many of whom have hundreds (if not thousands!) of users inside s2Member. If your web host really says that s2Member is too much for your server, you should probably look into switching to another web host.

Regarding the 503 errors: there are lots of different things that could cause that. If you could tell us the exact error message, we might be able to point you in the right direction. Otherwise, we recommend starting with the suggestions in this KB article: Knowledge Base » Mod Security, Random 503/403 Errors

Hi Raam,
The error message is; 503: Service Temporarily Unavailable
Too many IP addresses accessing one secure area!
Please contact Support if you need assistance.

My host spent another couple of hours on it thismorning, and came to the following conclusion.;
“(8:41 pm) [Ronald H.] I do apologize for the continued delay Shelley, I am still not entirely sure what is causing the 503, it may be that you are hitting the 25 process limit, so I am doing research on that, however this process can take some time as I need to watch the processes to find out if they are spiking at any point.
(8:45 pm) [Ronald H.] Okay Shelley, I have located the issue. I apologize for the delay
(8:45 pm) [Shelley]: wow, great
(8:46 pm) [Ronald H.] It seems that the issue is being caused by the s2member plugin conflicting with some of the other settings on your wordpress.
(8:58 pm) [Ronald H.] Unfortunately aside from disabling the plugin for you, there aren’t any options I have to assist with this issue from live chat, as I don’t have access or coding knowledge to fix the issue. In this case I would suggest that you contact the plugin developer to get support, it may be a conflict between your wordpress version and the plugin that only the developer can resolve. Additionally I found this article to give you some assistance in the meantime: http://www.s2member.com/forums/topic/fails-to-load-with-s2member-plugin-active/
(9:00 pm) [Ronald H.] I apologize that I am not able to further resolve this issue at this time, unfortunately this is an issue that would require a lot of coding that goes beyond HostGator’s scope of support, and even beyond my own personal knowledge of PHP.”

Do you have any suggestions for me? It seems to work sometimes but not others. Really need to fix this, but still don’t know where to start.

Cheers
Shelley

Hello Shelley,

I believe this is caused by the settings under Dashboard -› s2Member® -› Restriction Options -› Unique IP Access Restrictions. Check those settings and see if that’s it.

Hope this helps. :)

Thankyou Eduan, You’re a Gem! It’s all fixed – AND I learned that my VA is not one to trust with full access to the website. Apparently she must have shared the login details!

Can’t thank you enough, Very grateful.
Shelley
