Hi Jim.
Sorry for not replying sooner.
Hope you are have sorted out the solution you wanted.
But the mailchimp solution should work for you, as that is where your members email list would be had you adopted that system, it is free for the first 2000 emails.

You can do this by linking new posts to mailchimp, that will send out an email when new content appears, using its rss feature. Search for mailchimp rss emails.

You might be better off using a simple email form plugin. Contact form 7 might fit the bill, free from the WordPress site.

When a member attempts to access a protected page they will be asked to log in or join up.
If they have already paid to join then they will know their user name and password.
You should also be able to place a login panel using a widget if you wish.

You can test this by login out and then clicking on a protected page.
