I already got 2 hacked payments this week :-)
really need remedy soon….

(dunno what they did, but they managed to created an account and 1 respectively 2 days later I get a mail by paypal that the payment failed – never happened before… – ant this weren’t payments funded by wire check – on those I know that they fail from time to time)
or is a real hacked payment that someone changes the amount and only pays 0.01$ for an article?

Doooh, S2member really seems to become more and more a tool for North America, Ozzie and UK users only. Here in good old Europe without payments pro, it’s not very well integrated…

Hopefully I will move to Vancouver middle of next year…..

ups, that was of course a typo. Nginx replaces apache… (most people recommend to install apache nevertheless but don’t start it, because of some libraries – I think just for wordpress it works without apache at all however too).

Nginx is much more limited in functionality than Apache, just made for serving websites, hence it’s much faster and consumes less memory (well it always depends on the configuration, but by default or by sensible configuration it’s only about 1/5 I would say). Especially serving cached sites nginx is much faster.

That’s the tutorial I used more or less: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-opensuse-12.1-x86_64-with-nginx-ispconfig-3
(didn’t install everything from it, cause no need for email server or whatsoever as I use google apps for business instead).

quickcache replaces apache. I’m using it together with some other speedy stuff (just google nginx server setup (and your linux distro name) – I followed a tutorial that’s called something like: how to setup a perfect server – opensuse nginx…

I’m using qtranslate which really slows my site down (about factor 2-3) keep that in mind if you look at openmtbmap.org or velomap.org and assess the speed. Google logs my site at about average 0.8 seconds. I think that’s fine, knowing without qtranslate it would be well below 0.5 seconds. Building the cached page takes about 1.0 seconds. Mind I’m on an overpowered dedicated server with i7 and 8GB Ram (no SSD though – that would surely double speed again if you use SSD for operating system and all website stuff except big downloads).

I’m using Nginx and cannot complain about speed so far concerning s2member and quickcache. Other caching plugins weren’t any faster….

I’m rather hoping the announced s2member big update comes soon. It’s always “coming soon” since over 18 month, some features that they promise for it, have been promised to appear over 2 years ago. Really important stuff like sending emails on account expiry are promised since very long and still no show….

However I do not know how to change to any other membership plugin, so I really hope s2member get their act together….

I (or my users) faced this error countless times over the last years. I would say it happens on every 10th to 20th registration.
Usually a couple hours later it’s fine again. I rather thought that it’s related to Paypal servers being down. I’m not kidding, but at least here in Europe the Paypal API servers don’t seen to have more than 95% uptime.

It’s like in your Paypal account – clicking on stuff like search payments or last month sales report, takes 10-20 seconds for Paypal to handle out. It’s insane how crappy Paypal servers are in relation to the amount they are charging.

I’m also affected as of today. Some days ago it still worked. Only happens on subscription button!
My income completly broke down …..

NEED REMEDY SOON

okay, after disabling encryption, emptying all caches and recreating the button it started working again. I rather deem this error is related to s2member.

First after switching off encryption, my button completley disappeared on my website (was still visible on the edit page though).
Not having the buttons encrypted is not nice though however…. I had the same button for well over 2 years now….

I have googled about this error, and it doesn’t seem any other wordpress plugin users got this problem – the bug is rather reported by people who want to pay at paypal and not website coders/owners.

This is really a part of utmost importance to everyone with a medium to large userbase. It would be great if it could be integrated into the main UI and not as a quite difficult hack (difficult for the standard wordpress user/admin who cannot write PHP himself).

Can I expect it to be integrated rather soon? (It’s great that after what seems to me like 1 year without nearly any change on the functionality, during the last month quite a lot of really needed little functionality got integrated).

Also it would be great to have another reminder X days after demotion.
Nearly all other membership plugins handle this point. S2member still doesn’t..

(BTW in February 2012 this feature was promised to launch in March (2012))

Uh, that’s really expensive compared to using Hetzner Root Servers that I need anyhow…
Any tips on how to make it less errorprone using a normal root server?

restarting cancelled subscription is a real PITA.

In all cases I had so far, the clients Credit Card didn’t work anymore. So tell you’re client to check that. Once that’s fixed, you need to go to the subscription profile, increase the max fail count, and then click on resume, and click on collect outstanding payments (you cannot collect that, before you have increased that counter for failed payments).

I never manage it in less than 10minutes per profile, luckily I only had a handful of profiles to reactivate. I think the first time it took me several hours….

thanks for the reply

okay, sorry. The payment Notification via the API works. However the description text is wrong, because the payment notification doesn’t take place directly after payment, but actually after registration. I don’t really know yet, what happens if the user registers 40 hours after payment though (is the payment notification then sent 40 hours later or dropped?).
So far every payment notification included both email addresses…

Posted: Tuesday Jul 17th, 2012 at 5:22 pm #19562

How can the Payment Notification include the email used during signup, if signup hasn’t yet happened – or is the following text wrong! (as for Paypal – I use paypal standard, as Pro isn’t available in Austria):

So, unlike the `Signup` Notification, `Payment` Notifications take place whenever actual payments are received, instead of just once after signup is completed. If a payment is required during signup ( i.e. no Free Trial is being offered ), a Signup Notification will be triggered, and a Payment Notification will ALSO be triggered. In other words, a Payment Notification occurs anytime funds are received, no matter what.

I need the payment notification included into the SAME email as the signup notification. (of course I additionally need a payment notification – cause sometimes people don’t register at all after payment).

No, as far as I can see, this email wouldn’t include the username, so fail again. I already have this information in the paypal email, and I have the username in the new user notification email. However no chance to see which paypal email belongs to which username!!!

I don’t need loads of emails, I need one email in which I can see all of the following:
First Name, Last Name as entered in Paypal
First Name, Last Name as entered on registration
Email used with Paypal
Email used to register

Optionally but would be very handy:Amount Paid

Currently there is Signup Notification and Registration Notification, but impossible to relate them to each other!!!!!!!
This is really annoying. And currently the only way to make a connection is using the search on the wordpress “user” panel for the subscriber ID. However ONCE a user got demoted, there is NO F***** way to tell what and when he paid, because the subcriber ID got deleted, and there is no connection at all in you logs concerning registration details versus paypal details.

Effectively around 10% of my users I cannot connect to the paypal payments anymore. Some reasons:
Used paypal account of parents/friends/wife to pay (so neither email nor name matches).
To avoid spam, use an arbitrary email on registration
To avoid spam, use an arbitrary paypal email
Change email overtime
…. well probably many more probs. One year after payment, this increases to around 20%.

And no, looking at payed at time X, so what registrations happened at time X often doesn’t help. Many users simply don’t register right after payment, but some days, later (meaning you may have hundreds of other registrations in between) or even worse – contact you a few weeks/month later complaining why they didn’t receive a login (and they lost that registration email (often in spam) – and didn’t follow the registration link on paypal).

thanks for the quick reply…

I think I can handle the tax rate myself (paypal pro is still not available in Austria, and there doesn’t seem any indication it will ever be available in Europe except for UK AFAIK).

As for 2. please please put that on top priority. It’s a huge drawback for anyone using s2member…. I’ts a real PITA to set that manually. It’s like 2-5 minutes per payment to set that date right (you need to check old payment email, and then new to add it up)… You keep telling that it’s on the list since over 1 year but nothing happened here.

Oh and how to handle 3.??? Must I assume there is no way to do it right now? I think it should be a top priority for you, to somehow integrate automatic emails, or explain how to do it. For many people automatic emails could likely add 50% income in the second year, 75% for the third year, double income by 4. year…. (assuming you give memberships for 1 year duration, the more the shorter the duration of non revolving memberships).

I really like s2member, but if 2. and 3. are not possible, I will need to have a look around for other solutions to handle the payments.

okay, but what about Point 2 and Point 3….

both are even more important for me. (Remember in Europe many people have no credit card, and as such about 75% of my members don’t want or cannot get a subscription. It would be a huge pity if I lost 75% of my members in the second year, because paypal telling them, “you already paid for that product”… or me needing to write lots of emails by hand…

(of course first 2. needs to be working, then I need 3.).

Oh and 4. —- Could you write or point me to a tutorial how to handle VAT?
I would need customers inside the European Union (like 95% of my donators) to pay 20% VAT, but if they are resident of (main importance) Switzerland or outside European Union deduct the VAT. Now I know how to put the 20% VAT into the paypal button, but I don’t know how to get it deducted automatically for non EU residents….

okay, seems to be it. My PCRE version is: 8.13 2011-08-16

so my pcre is right from August, when the bug got reported.

Posted: Monday Feb 27th, 2012 at 5:14 pm #6576

yes, also with the newest version. It started with the above mentioned version.

PHP 5.3.8 (the newest available on Opensuse I guess). Everything else works fine, that’s why it’s not that troublesome. Also automatic updates work without probs.

Posted: Monday Feb 27th, 2012 at 6:41 am #6507

Tried it – still the exactly same error.
